Définir une unité dérivée
On défini une unité dérivée associée à une grandeur grâce à une expression de cette grandeur (Cela correspond à ce que l'on appelle analyse dimensionnelle). Prenons un exemple : l'énergie. Le concept d'énergie est associé à une variable physique. Autrement dis c'est un nom que l'on donne à une grandeur mesurable associée à une quantité présente dans les équations en physique. On retrouve donc l'énergie dans certaines expression.
Prenons l'une de ces expressions : celle de l'énergie cinétique d'un objet. On a : [math]\displaystyle{ E_c = \frac{1}{2} \times m \times v^2 }[/math] avec [math]\displaystyle{ E_c }[/math] l'énergie cinétique, [math]\displaystyle{ m }[/math] la masse de l'objet et [math]\displaystyle{ v }[/math] la vitesse.
[math]\displaystyle{ m }[/math] est une masse, elle s'exprime donc en kilogramme. On dis que [math]\displaystyle{ m }[/math] a la dimension d'une masse, ou encore que [math]\displaystyle{ m }[/math] est homogène à une masse.
[math]\displaystyle{ v }[/math] est une distance divisée par un temps. On note cela [math]\displaystyle{ [v] = \frac{L}{T} }[/math] ou [math]\displaystyle{ [v] }[/math] indiquent que l'on parle de la dimension de la grandeur [math]\displaystyle{ v }[/math], [math]\displaystyle{ L }[/math] étant la dimension d'une longueur et [math]\displaystyle{ T }[/math] la dimension d'un temps. La dimension d'une masse est notée [math]\displaystyle{ M }[/math] On a donc [math]\displaystyle{ [E_c] = M \times L^2 \times T^{-2} }[/math] (on ne tient pas compte du coefficient [math]\displaystyle{ \frac{1}{2} }[/math]). On peut alors définir une unité, que l'on appelle Joule, que l'on note [math]\displaystyle{ J }[/math], et qui correspond à l'unité dérivée du SI pour l'énergie. On a alors qu'une joule est égale à un kilogramme par mètre carré par seconde carré. Ou encore : [math]\displaystyle{ 1J = 1kg.m^2.s^{-2} }[/math].
Unités dérivées usuelles
Les colonnes « M - L - T - I - Θ (thêta) - N - J » précisent les « facteurs dimensionnels » des grandeurs dérivées, correspondant aux « expressions » dans les unités de base du Système international « kg - m - s - A - K - mol - cd ».
Ce tableau est loin de présenter toutes les unités mais il donne une bonne idée des unités les plus courantes. Il existe des listes plus détaillées.
